Since 1929, the ultimate team game for golf has provided a number of thrilling moments. If you play the game, you appreciate the change in energy surrounding this event!

Golf is generally an individual sport, you versus the course being the main competitive angle. Adding teammates and playing for your country takes the vibe to a whole other level. Coordinated clothing (which has become an even larger than expected part of this event), strategy and gamesmanship are all on stage to behold.

Every two years the Team from the U.S. takes on the Team from Europe in this wonderful event. Alternating continents ensures that each team has a 'home game' every other year. The fans are enthusiastic and incredibly passionate for their respective teams. Chants of "USA, USA, USA!" or "Ole, Ole, Ole!" are heard throughout the course and the party atmosphere is electric.

Even people who do not play golf can appreciate the spectacle that is the Ryder Cup. Viewing the competition through patriotic lenses adds to the energy and excitement of this event.

The changing format also is intriguing, as it is designed in a 'match play' setting, meaning that you win or lose a hole depending on the score made by each competitor. Even having a high number on a hole does not hurt as much as it would in stroke play.

Here is the format and definition of your information:

Match Formats

  • Foursomes: Two players from each team play one ball, alternating shots on each hole.

  • Four-Ball: Each player on the two-person team plays their own ball, and the best score on the hole for that team is used.

  • Singles: Each golfer plays an individual match against a single opponent from the other team.

The following are some fun facts about the Ryder Cup and its history:
